An Unexpected Aesthetic: The Search for New Directions

Curated by : Claire Lerner

How does the contemporary photographer create under the weight of what has come before, especially on California’s Monterey Peninsula? The need to make it new requires a search for a unique direction, which in turn requires the discovery of unexpected techniques, ideas and vision through which the artist gains new insight. The burden of the contemporary photographer is the imperative to disrupt convention and continue to evolve.

Invited Artists:
Mary Cheung, Margo Jones-Duvall, Cody Edison, Janet Fine, Genevieve Hastings, Greg Mettler, Ben Nixon, Gary Shallcross, and Matthew Vogt

Opening Reception: March 10, 2012, 4 to 6 PM
Panel Discussion: March 10, 2012, 2 to 4 PM

Source and Resource

One Person Exhibition

Carl Cherry Center for the Arts, 4th and Guadalupe, Carmel, CA
Reception 5-7, Friday, January 15th, 2010
For the past six years Claire has been working with the notion of fragmentary experience and the meaning that may or may not result from the arbitrary and the accidental. She places conversations and visual imagery together in categories of information such as sky, ground and conversation. Her goal is to yield an aggregate aesthetic meaning and relationship of words and vision where none existed before. The subject of water and its relationship to the human condition has been a recurrent theme in her work as she seeks to explore water as a metaphor for the subconscious mind and the human condition.
